The Balan Wonderworld game for Nintendo Switch surprised a customer who expected it to be bad, finding it quite a blast despite being somewhat janky and lacking polish. The game features creative worlds, a variety of silly and fun costumes, and fun boss battles that make use of powers/costumes, although the generic combat music gets repetitive. The co-op system is fun but feels tacked on, lacking polish in making gameplay smooth. The game's fun statue collecting portion soon shifts to focus on QTE (Quick Time Events) sections, making it less about exploring the world. Although entertaining and fun to play, the game is a clumsily written love letter to nostalgic mascot platforming, warts and all, and players need to get past some of the little issues that can begin to pile up. On the negative side, the one-button controls leave some costumes/powers feeling pointless at times, and the game's minor lack of polish can make the gameplay less smooth. Also, the game's tacked-on co-op system needs improvement. The game is ideal for lovers of quirky Japanese platformers from the 32/64-bit era, but it does feel unfinished, and the performance can be uneven.
